Purpose of Lesson:
I. What is a browser?
II. How expensive are browsers and how can I get one?
Fortunately for you, these two programs are free and can be downloaded from several sites including Download.com.
III. What are the main features of Netscape Navigator?
A browser gives you different options for viewing the information from the Web; knowing how to use the browser to the fullest will allow you to enjoy the Internet more. It's like drinking a milkshake: plain vanilla is fine, but when you add nuts, chocolate, and whip cream, it makes the ice cream so much better. In the same way, the more you know about the browser and its features, the more information you can enjoy.
Now, let's look at the main parts of the program and its menus for Netscape 4.5+:
First, here is the main toolbar which controls many of the features of the browser:
Some of the parts of the toolbar will be taught in class; others will not. The ones you should know how to use are:
Back: go back to the previous page
Forward: go to next page
Reload: reload the page from the remote server
Home: go to the home page
Search: search the Internet
My Netscape: go to your personal start page
Images: show images (pictures and graphics)
Print: print the current page or frame
Security: tells you if the page is secure
Stop: stop loading the page
File Menu:
The File menu allows you to open and close different windows, save and
edit pages, upload files, print pages, and quit the program.
Edit Menu:
The edit menu lets you undo mistakes, cut, copy, and paste information from the browser window, as well as giving you the power to search for key words on the current page. You can also change your preferences here.
