I. The Early Years
I'm originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, the capital of the state. About I have two older brothers, and my parents still live in the area. I grew up on the northwest part of the city for most of my school years. I had several different jobs while going to school including working on a farm, in restaurants, and at a movie. I participated on the cross-country running and wrestling teams in school, and I played the saxophone and French horn in the high school band.
My favorite classes, in order of preference, were:
- Business Law
- Advanced Chemistry
- Spanish
- Earth Science
My hobbies included:
- stamp collecting
- astronomy
- model rockets
II. Leaving Home
When I was 19 years old, I moved to Venezuela, South America, and worked as a missionary for 18 months. After I returned to the United States, I worked in a
fan factory for several months to earn enough money to to attend college. I moved to Provo, Utah, and studied at Brigham Young University. I majored in Spanish education, and I worked in the cafeteria in the beginning to support my schooling. Later on, I found a job teaching Spanish at the missionary training center in Provo, which was established to train missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
III. Family Life
I met my wife in January of 1987, and we got married later on that year. We spent our first years in Utah Valley, Utah, until we moved to Japan in 1991.
I took a job teaching English in Tokyo, Japan, for five years, and then we moved to the city of Nagoya, where we lived for three more years. Our first daughter was born in Utah, and our three younger children were born in Japan. The of our oldest children attended Japanese schools and had a wonderful time learning in Japanese. We really enjoyed the wide variety of school activities and programs for students, particularly the emphasis on sports, arts, and music.
We moved back to Utah in 1999, and now live in American Fork. As a family, we enjoy telling stories, playing games, launching rockets, and camping.
