Purpose of Lesson:

I. What is the purpose of this course?
As mentioned on the main page, this is a beginning course designed to help students learn how to use the Internet as a way of improving language skills and for promoting greater cultural understanding with others from around the world. A lot of work will require writing, particularly for academic purposes.

Let me emphasize that is for beginning students, although some of the ideas would be helpful for more advanced users of the Internet. You should look at the course outline to see if this course is best for you.

I do promise that you will learn a great many skills that will help you both in your academic studies and work in the future.

II. What will I NOT learn in this course?

This is not a course on computer programming or advanced Web Page design. It is a general course on the Internet. If you want to study these areas, you should look for this information elsewhere.

III. Is it a difficult class?

Because it is a beginning computer class, anyone interested in learning about the Internet whether or not they have previous computer experience, will find the class useful. We will start with the basics and then go from there.

I must say that there is a lot of work required outside of class. If you're interested in an easy "A" and want to just sit back and write e-mail, this isn't the class for you, but all of the work will prepare you with important skills. It will be challenging, like life itself, but it should be a fun and rewarding experience too.

IV. How much English is required?

Students should be at an intermediate level. You will write a lot in this class, but I emphasize that what you write is more important than your accuracy in using English. Learning about the Internet using English as the vehicle for your learning is what will will do most in the class.

V. Will anyone be available to help me with my homework and projects?

Of course. That's my job. Feel free to send me an e-mail message or drop by my office during my consultation hours. I want to help you learn the material, so don't hesitate to ask.
